There is often a DISCONNECT.
Our actions often do not fully align with our true intentions and beliefs. We deeply feel our love for God and truth, but our heads and rational thinking don’t catch up. We make mistakes, say and do things we regret, and don’t live up to our own standards.
Recently, a friend shared some wise words that really resonated with me. He said, “I know you’ve made mistakes. Your head was messed up; you didn’t fully understand and thought you knew better than you did. But through it all, your heart was in the right place.” These words were profoundly comforting, as they acknowledged the gap between our intellectual understanding and our underlying good intentions.
Confront MISTAKES
Sometimes, I was highly legalistic, judgmental, or even hurtful in my words and actions, believing I was doing the right thing. The gossip that slipped through my lips and the ways I used others under the guise of wanting to help them were wrong, and I regret them deeply.
But in acknowledging these mistakes, I also realized that my heart genuinely sought to do good, even if my head had not yet caught up. The circumstances, my cultural conditioning, and the company I kept at the time all shaped my perspective. I had not yet done the necessary Bible study or spiritual growth to align my thoughts and behaviors fully.
GROWTH
These mistakes, ugly actions, attitudes, and words I now see have shaped my character, humbled me, and inspired me to pursue continuous growth. While I cannot undo the past, I can move forward with intention, striving to align my head and heart better.
God still has work to do with us. We are all works in progress, and mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. The key is acknowledging them, reflecting on what we can learn, and committing to improving.
TIME
We can love God with all our hearts and try our best while not understanding all we know and certainly what we do not know yet. Acknowledging this growth gap and the time it takes your thinking to catch up with your feelings will help you continue to grow.
This is a lifetime pursuit requiring humility and a willingness to learn.
