Bible Meditations
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18.
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14.
A soft answer turneth away wrath: But grievous words stir up anger. Proverbs 15:1.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Matthew 5:9.
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 1 Peter 3:8–11.
Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Colossians 4:6.
Can we disagree without hating?
Disagreeing does not equal hatred, but all should disagree respectfully. Aggression should never be part of a disagreement.
We all believe in freedom of speech, but there should be limits to how we speak to others.
We have broken all the playground rules from our childhood. They taught us that my rights end where your nose begins. We can vigorously disagree, but we can not harm.
Just remember that hatred silences while love engages in discussion.
It is time to listen fully to the other side’s argument while avoiding personal attacks.
We can respect someone’s right to an opinion while disagreeing with it.
Disagreeing without hating requires emotional maturity and self-control.
Disagreeing without hatred allows for the possibility of finding common ground.
How to disagree without hating?
We must actively listen to the other person’s perspective while focusing on the issue, not on personal attacks. Express your opinion without the accusations.
We can acknowledge valid points in the other person’s argument and ask questions to clarify understanding rather than making assumptions.
We can use respectful language and tone throughout the discussion.
As in arguments with your spouse, drop the absolutes like “always” or “never” in your arguments.
Be open to changing your mind if presented with compelling evidence. Focus on facts and evidence rather than emotions or personal opinions.
Acknowledge the other person’s right to their opinion, even if you disagree. Avoid interrupting and let the other person finish their thoughts.
Avoid generalizations and stereotypes in your arguments.
Focus on the future and potential solutions rather than dwelling on past grievances.
Avoid dismissive language or tone that might make the other person feel devalued.
Offer alternatives or compromises instead of just criticizing the other person’s ideas.
