"Principle of Control," The 90/10 rule
The Law of 90/10 is a concept attributed to Stephen Covey, author of the bestselling book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." Covey introduced this principle as part of his teachings.
The "Principle of Control" suggests that 10% of life is made up of what happens to us, while the remaining 90% is determined by how we react to those circumstances. In essence, it emphasizes that our responses, attitudes, and actions significantly impact our lives more than the events themselves. This principle encourages individuals to control their reactions and mindset, which are crucial in shaping outcomes and overall well-being.
Truths we must apply to our lives
We are responsible regardless of what happens.
Our attitude plays a significant role in outcomes.
We must focus on what we can control, not what we can't.
Our response, more than the circumstance, determines our success or failure.
Believing and trusting God leads to better results and personal growth.
We must live flexibly or, as I teach missionaries, fluidly. We have to learn to go with the flow, the unexpected.
I must own my actions, attitudes, and decisions.
The righteous man falls seven times and gets back up. Bounce back from setbacks and continue forward.
God is using every experience to grow us.
Live in gratitude and contentment because we know that all that happens is God-approved, God-filtered, and God-allowed.
Learn to endure and wait. Think of all the Bible people and what they suffered till God worked: Joseph for 13 years, Moses for 40 years, David for about 12 or more years, Noah for 120 years, and so on.
Don't give up. There are still things you can change and steps you can take. Keep working at it. Keep your eyes on the goal, God's high calling in Christ Jesus.
Act with integrity no matter what happens.
Cast all your cares on the Lord.
Forgive, let go of grudges, move forward with a light heart.,
Steps to take
Pause before reacting.
Work on what you can control: your attitude, actions, and response.
Keep looking up and trusting your Father.
Don't complain, blame, accuse, whine, or otherwise indulge in self pity.
Let the crisis teach you where you need to grow.
Be kind to others. They may be facing challenges and reacting differently. Be understanding.
You are responsible for yourself, not others. You can only change you.
