Overcoming Anxiety: Recognizing, Understanding, and Conquering Your Anxieties
Recognizing the Difference Between Worry and Anxiety, Finding Peace Through God's Word, and Practical Steps to Take Control of Your Life
Take the Anxiety Test
Do you regularly feel tense, on edge, or irritable?
Do you have a difficult time concentrating?
Do you have a difficult time falling asleep or staying asleep?
Have you experienced panic attacks, increased heart rate, shallow breathing, or hyperventilation?
Are you quickly tired, have muscle tension or stomach issues, or are you overwhelmed?
If you answered yes to a majority of these questions then maybe this article is for you. God doesn’t want you being anxious.
Difference between worry and anxiety
Worry and anxiety are often used interchangeably, but they are distinct experiences:
Worry typically involves thoughts about potential future problems or uncertainties. It is a normal human emotion and can sometimes be a helpful motivator to take action. However, excessive worry can lead to distress and interfere with an individual's daily life.
Anxiety, on the other hand, is a broader, more pervasive feeling of unease, fear, or apprehension. It often involves physiological symptoms such as increased heart rate, muscle tension, and sweating. Anxiety can be a reaction to stress or a specific trigger, but it can also occur without any apparent cause, and it may persist over time.
In summary, worry is more focused on specific concerns, while anxiety involves a general feeling of fear or unease. Both worry and anxiety can be normal at certain levels, but they can become problematic when they are excessive and interfere with daily functioning.
Help from God's Word
Focus your thoughts on today and wait to worry about tomorrow until tomorrow. Matthew 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Instead of worrying or being anxious, tell the Lord your need in prayer and thank Him in advance for meeting your need. Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Take your burdens to the Lord and leave them there. The Bible uses the word casting which means to propel something from one place to another, to transfer your concerns, fears, anxieties on the Lord. I Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
Remember that God helps His people. You are not alone, so instead of getting discouraged, you need to consider the power of your Almighty God. Isaiah 41:10 fear thou not; for I am with thee: Be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; Yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Hebrews 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
God has promised never to leave or fail you no matter what happens or who else leaves you. Deuteronomy 31:8 And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
