There are several known and discussed measures to distinguish between a leader and a manager. The first question to consider is:
Can you instigate positive change?
Leadership is much more than overseeing, ensuring everyone obeys the rules, and checking financial procedures.
Can you move the organization in a new direction?
Can you do more than oversee?
How do you help adapt to change?
Do you have the vision to see where the team should go?
How is your ability to inspire and mobilize?
The most challenging question is, do you rely on an authority or power structure to leverage action?
Are you a trust-builder or a trust burner?
Do the people you lead feel valued by you?
Do you maintain what the power structure wants or create positive change?
Take a moment to meditate on these things, and it will help you understand your leadership ability and what work on changing.
