Leadership Lessons from Moses
Obedience, humility, and preparation and how they work in our lives.
Moses grew up bi-culturally. His own Jewish mother had raised him after being found in the river. Then, they raised him as an Egyptian in the palace. I can only assume that helped Moses learn to navigate social and cultural contexts better than most.
Moses learned what his own wilfulness could cause when he accidentally killed a man. He fled, thinking that he had abruptly ended whatever God's plan for his life was. Now spending significant periods of time alone, God taught Moses humility and stewardship.
Moses was developing his “Be Level.” The “Be Level” refers to the real you. The private you, you without makeup on. It is your identity, your true identity. If you are born again, then it is your identity in Christ. There, in obscurity, God shaped Moses. He formed his character. Much of our spiritual and personal growth will take place in the alone times and often when we begin to believe that God will not be using us for anything.
Moses had been so long defeated and alone that he couldn’t believe that God would use him to confront Pharaoh. He doubted himself, God, and anything that called on him to step up.
But Moses stepped up. He submitted to the will of God. Moses acknowledged that genuine leadership starts with surrendering to God. He surrendered willingly to obey God and follow His plan.
Moses learned at the burning bush that any genuine success would be that God would be with him. Exodus 3:12. His leadership was not based on self-confidence, personal abilities, or plans, but on God's guiding and providing.
Moses dealt with great pressures. He helped and led people. He sure made mistakes, but showed great leadership when he helped Joshua be his successor.
Joshua goes from a helper to the leader and Moses’ substantial investment in Joshua’s life made that possible.
Moses was willing to teach, invest, guide, and give of his reputation to make Joshua the success that he would become.
There are many more lessons, but here are a few to consider.
Humble obedience as the meekest man of his day makes the difference. Trusting God to do great things is a prerequisite for a spiritual leader. Being a mentor and giving all you have worked for to another might just be the greatest picture of leadership in anyone’s life.
