God Keeps on Loving and Nothing Can Stop Him
God is wonderful beyond description. He loves and keeps on loving. He shows mercy and never stops.
And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. Exodus 34:5–7.
We have been meditating on this passage of Scripture for several days now. We have seen that God, our Father, the great I AM, is merciful, gracious, super patient, and overflowing with goodness and truth.
Now, look with me to the next thing God said about Himself. God said that He has mercy on thousands.
Isn't it better to know who God says He is and not what religion, culture, or the world says about who He is? God is wonderfully loving and merciful. He is patient to the point of indulgence. He is loaded down with goodness, and He is faithful to be all that we have seen to this point and all the rest.
Now consider with me that He, God, our Father, Abba, I AM keeps mercy for thousands.
Mercy
The word mercy still means goodness, kindness, and even lovingkindness. However, the word carries another connotation: it refers to faithfulness, loyalty, relationship, or covenant.
The word is used to refer to a joint obligation between relatives, friends, host and guest, master and servant. This is a covenant of closeness, solidarity, and loyalty. This covenant is usually made in a ceremony. The closest thing we have to this type of ceremony would be marriage. We covenant together, make a commitment for better or worse, etc.
This mercy is the type of covenant that Ruth made with Naomi. She promised to never leave her and much more. Jonathan and David made this type of covenant. They promised to show kindness and mercy to each other and even to their children.
Keeping
This word means to guard, watch, protect. The word in Exodus 34:78 has the idea of keeping with faithfulness or keeping the covenant.
So, between the two words of keeping and mercy, we have the basic idea that God does what He says He will do. He doesn't give temporary mercy. He keeps mercy, but more than that, His name is I AM, and these two words refer to a relationship. That is what we have with God through Jesus Christ.
We are His children. He loves us and will never stop; nothing can separate us from His love.
Thousands
The covenant He established embraces thousands of believers, a multitude beyond measure. This vast number encompasses all who believe in Him, trusting His words and deeds. I AM in His infinite faithfulness, continues to uphold His promise. He pours out on us His steadfast love, mercy, and kindness. This covenant is an enduring testament to His unwavering commitment to His people.
I AM
I AM is merciful, gracious, patient, rich in goodness and truth, and keeps us in the relationship He has with us. He is faithful even when we are not. 2 Timothy 2:13.
God is so good that humans can't understand Him. he is love. He doesn't love or have love; He is love. That is so much deeper.
God's love is more than something He does or an attribute He possesses. He is fundamentally love. His very nature is love. God is the source of love, the very definition of love. All love comes from His love.
His love is not conditional but constant and eternal like He is. This means that His love is not dependent on our actions or circumstances, but it is always present and enduring, reflecting His unchanging nature.
The sun is the source of light, but the sun doesn't have light. Water doesn't possess wetness, but it is wetness. That is exactly what is true of God and love; it is His very nature. This concept should inspire awe and reverence in us, as we contemplate the depth and breadth of God's love.
Amen
