From Self to Service: A Call to Humble Obedience
Leadership and service lessons from Isaiah. The question is who do we think we are to rise up against God. We are only instruments in His hands.
Consider this verse to improve our leadership, service, and walk with God. Then, take the following questions and consider where you are.
Do you fall into the category of "axe boasting?"
Do you sometimes get caught up in your own self-importance?
Do you question God for how He is using you?
Do you argue with God?
Thinking on this verse, do you tend to forget who you are? Who is really in charge?
Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? As if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, Or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood. Isaiah 10:15.
Evaluating my Humility
Do you quickly recognize that any success or accomplishment comes from God's Holy Spirit and God's work, or do you bask in the glory of what you have done?
Do you sometimes fall into the trap of boasting about what He has done with and through you and not what you have done?
Are you quick to honor God publicly and privately for your successes?
Can you see the foolishness of thinking highly of ourselves or our contribution?
Have you learned to be content with God's working in and through your life, or do you tend to complain and whine
Understanding our Role and Purpose
Have you realized and accepted that we are tools in God's hands?
Do you recognize the hand of God in our lives, sometimes putting us into less-than-ideal circumstances because of His purposes? Remember Joseph, sold into slavery, falsely accused, abandoned, and forgotten because God had a plan.
Do you recognize that you are not the master of your destiny in the fullest sense, as much as it goes against modern ideology?
Do you realize that we serve at the pleasure of our Lord Jesus Christ?
Do you find your identity and purpose in God's plan for your life? Not everyone wins. The children of Israel were slaves for over 400 years, loving God and believing, but never saw in their lifetimes the promises fulfilled.
Accepting God's Timing
Do you acknowledge God's control of your life? His choosing when and how He will use you?
Are you patiently waiting to see what He is doing?
Do you hate or fear losing control of your life?
Have you considered what might seem like a failure to you might be the craftsman in charge of you?
Have you accepted the fact that you are part of a plan that is bigger than you, and the roles you play are determined by how God plans to use you?
Evaluating our yieldedness, surrender
Do you see how God uses every outcome to teach you humility and faith>
Are you willing to work the process while you leave the product or results in God's hands?
Have you committed your life to doing what God wants, no matter how small or great, with an attitude of gratitude because you know you are His instrument to use as He sees fit?
Have you ever considered that God might be doing something beyond your wildest imagination, something much bigger than you could ever have conceived of?
Will you just trust that God knows what He is doing and will do what is best?
Arguing
Do you fall into the trap of complaining when God puts you through tricky times
Do you blame God, others, or even yourself as you argue with God?
Do you argue that you might know what is best for your life?
Do you argue that God should do with you and for you what he is doing in the life of another
Do you think your plan for your life might be better?
