Beyond the Manger: Jesus' Self-Proclaimed Reasons for Coming
Exploring Christ's Mission in His Own Words
Have you ever taken the time to consider why Jesus came into the world. What did Jesus say was His reason to come into the world.
Why Jesus Came
To destroy the work of the devil
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
1 John 3:8
To fulfill the law
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Matthew 5:17
To give His life as a ransom
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
To save sinners
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15
To seek and save the lost
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10.
To take away our sins
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 1 John 3:5.
That the world might be saved
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:17.
To Give us Abundant Life
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10.
To Do the Father’s will
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:37–40.
What Jesus did not come to do
To Condemn the world
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:17.
Quotes to Consider
"I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison." Napoleon Bonaparte
"Christ came not to condemn, but to save." John Owen
"Jesus Christ came not to condemn you but to save you, knowing your name, knowing all about you, knowing your weight right now, knowing your age, knowing what you do, knowing where you live, knowing what you ate for supper and what you will eat for breakfast, where you will sleep tonight, how much your clothing cost, who your parents were. He knows you individually as though there were not another person in the entire world." A.W. Tozer
