A Love Beyond Understanding
Our Astonishing Identity as God's Sons
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 1 John 3:1.
These have to be some of the most beautiful words in the Bible. We are called to behold, see, contemplate, and marvel at how much He loves us. This love shocks us and compels us to stop, take notice, and think about it.
This love is foreign and unusual, outside of human experience. Humans can’t understand it; its depth and richness spring from the heart of God.
More than a title
We are genuinely His children. Our identity has been fundamentally transformed. We have a new nature. We are born into His family and He will publicly recognize us as His children at our adoption. All of this happens not because of what we do but because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross and the Holy Spirit, who already lives and abides in the believer.
While others may question their worth, search for their identity, and not know who they really are, we do. God loves us with an incomprehensible love; we are truly his children and have been given privileges beyond our wildest imagination.
What a transformation
We were sinful, fallen creatures alienated from God, but He has saved us and lifted us up to be His very children. Despite being dead in trespasses and sins, we now have the highest possible status in the universe and eternity. We didn’t earn it, but He gives us this status. We do not deserve it, but receive it entirely from God and His wonderful love for us.
Because of our new identity, we have the confidence to approach God, our Father. We call Him not only Father but Abba, Daddy. We have an intimate relationship, bold access, and confident assurance of His constant care and attention.
This status separates us.
There is something different about us. We are now identified not with our country, our culture, or even other humans. We have been lifted up to the position of sons of God. As new creatures, we have a new nature. We are the children of God, rescued, saved, transformed, and given a new identity. We are the very sons of God.
We love with the love of our Father. Just as our Father forgives, so do we forgive. We represent our Father. His love for us is a constant reminder of our worth and value in His eyes.
We will not one day be His children, but we are already. We must focus on these beautiful truths. They shape our understanding of who we are and who our Father is. Worship springs from our hearts. He has made us His own; He has made us His children.
Our future is not just secure, but God guarantees it. His marvelous, great love will never end. It is not conditional. He loves us, His children, and this love ensures our eternal security.
